Photographers must save their images to desktops or laptops in order to use image-editing software to improve their images. You may also use slideshow software to show off your favorite photos. Alternatively, some photographers may need another location to store their images in order to free up space on their camera’s storage cards.

Many photographers use USB cords to connect their cameras to their computers and store their photographs. However, USB devices are not always recognized by desktops and laptops. When this occurs, a message titled “USB device not recognized” appears right above the system tray, explaining that Windows is unable to identify an associated device (otherwise camera). This is how to repair a computer that won’t detect Canon cameras when connected through USB ports.

The Canon camera isn’t recognized by Windows 10.

  1. Turn off the Auto Power Off and Wi-Fi/NFC settings on your Canon camera.
  2. Get a Different USB Cable
  3. Use a different USB port to connect the camera.
  4. The Generic USB Hub Driver must be updated.
  5. Turn off your computer or laptop.
  6. Device Manager may be used to uninstall the camera.
  7. Start the Windows USB Troubleshooter program.
  8. With a Storage Card Reader, you can save camera photos to Windows.

1. Turn off the Auto Power Off and Wi-Fi/NFC settings on your Canon camera.

You’ll need to deactivate Auto power down and Wi-Fi/NFC settings on certain Canon cameras, such as the EOS Rebel T6S, before connecting the camera to a laptop or desktop. If the Wi-Fi/NFC option on the EOS Rebel T65 camera is enabled, for example, the camera will not connect. If you have both of those options activated, turn them off in your camera’s menu.

2. Get a Different USB Cable

A USB cable is included with many Canon cameras, but not all. IFC-400PCU or IFC-600PCU USB cables for Mini-B and Micro-B terminals are required for Canon digital compacts. If your camera didn’t arrive with a USB cable, check the documentation to make sure you’re using the correct cable. Get a new USB cable if this isn’t the case or if the cable isn’t functioning for any other reason.

3. Use a different USB port to connect the camera.

There might be a problem with one of the USB ports. Connect the camera to a different USB port to make sure there isn’t a problem with one of the ports. If Windows then detects your camera, the other USB port will need to be fixed.

5. Turn off your computer or laptop.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. The “USB device not recognized” problem may be resolved by unplugging and replugging your computer or laptop. Shut off your computer or laptop, then disconnect it for 10 minutes before reconnecting it.

6. Using Device Manager, uninstall the camera.

The camera information is erased when a camera is uninstalled using Device Manager in Windows. When Windows scans for hardware changes, it may detect the camera. This is how you can remove a Canon camera in Windows 10 using Device Manager.

  • Connect your Canon camera to a USB connection on your laptop or desktop computer.
  • To access the Win + X menu, use the Win key + X hotkey.
  • To open the Device Manager window, click the link below.

  • Expand the list of linked devices by double-clicking Portable Devices, which will include your camera.
  • In the screenshot just below, choose the Canon camera and then click the Uninstall option.

  • A dialog window appears, asking for more confirmation. To confirm, press the OK button on that window.
  • Then, at the top of the Device Manager window, hit the Scan for Hardware Changes button. Following that, Windows may identify the camera.

7. Run the USB Troubleshooter on Windows.

The Windows USB Troubleshooter may be able to correct a camera’s USB connection. That USB troubleshooter, however, is not included in Windows 10. However, you may still add the troubleshooter to the OS by following the steps below.

  • To begin, go to your browser and visit this page.
  • To save the Windows USB Troubleshooter to a folder, click the Download option there.
  • Then, from the location where you stored it, run the Windows USB Troubleshooter.

  • To go through the troubleshooter, press the Next button.
  • The Hardware and Devices troubleshooter might potentially help you resolve the “USB device not recognized” issue. By tapping the Cortana button and typing ‘troubleshoot’ into the search box, you may access the troubleshooter.
  • To access the list of troubleshooters straight below, choose Troubleshoot.

8. Use a Storage Card Reader to Save Camera Photos to Windows

It’s important to remember that you don’t need to connect your camera to your computer to save images to it. A storage card reader may also be used to save photos to a computer or laptop. A camera storage card may be inserted into an SD card slot on many laptops and desktops. So, on your desktop or laptop, have a robust lock for a camera card port.

You can install an external card reader to a PC even if it doesn’t have a card slot. You may, for example, acquire a card reader USB hub like the one seen in the figure below. Then you may transfer your photos to your computer by inserting the storage card from your camera into an appropriate slot. As a result, fixing the “USB device not recognized” problem isn’t absolutely necessary. At least one of those options should resolve the “USB device not recognized” issue, allowing you to save your Canon camera photos to your Pictures folder once again. If Windows 10 isn’t detecting your other devices, see this page for more information on how to repair the problem with keyboards, USB sticks, and printers.
