The New York Jets are riding high after their convincing victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The team will try to keep its momentum going in Week 3, as they take on their AFC East rival, Mike White is expected to remain the starting quarterback for this game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The “Mike White to remain New York Jets’ starting QB against Buffalo Bills” is a report that Mike White will remain the starter for the rest of the season.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — This week — and maybe beyond — the New York Jets are staying with fan favorite Mike White as quarterback.
Coach Robert Saleh revealed Wednesday that White would start against the Buffalo Bills over highly regarded youngster Zach Wilson, who is recovering from a knee ailment. Wilson’s injury is also a consideration, according to him, since the second overall pick is “not entirely ready to play.”
Saleh left it open-ended, refusing to declare if Wilson would return to the starting job once he is totally recovered, perhaps inciting a quarterback debate. The first-year coach said that he would “organically” handle the quarterback position.
“It is what it is if Mike is playing amazing football,” Saleh stated. “You might call it a debate or not. I can find an article from every single one of you that says that watching a young quarterback is the greatest thing he can do, so there’s no damage in any manner.
“We have complete faith in Zach,” he concluded. “He’ll do a fantastic job when he returns to the football field and is ready to play. His abilities are apparent. Whether he’s playing or not, there’s a lot of room for improvement. That is a fact. Those are historical facts that have been confirmed throughout history. You can get both done whether you’re playing or not.”
Saleh flipped the field. Wilson would “certainly” start as soon as he was well, he said on Monday. He’s now working on a week-by-week basis.
Despite a right-forearm injury sustained last Thursday night, White practiced Wednesday. White energized the offense in two starts as an injury replacement. Wilson practiced for the first time since spraining his right PCL against the New England Patriots on Oct. 24 — a two- to four-week ailment, according the club.
The Jets have four healthy quarterbacks, including Joe Flacco and Josh Johnson, who were relegated to the practice squad after performing well in a mop-up duty in the Colts’ 45-30 defeat. According to Saleh, Flacco, who was acquired in a trade on Oct. 25, will be the backup on Sunday. They used up all of their practice-squad elevations on Johnson, so the only option to get him on the 53-man roster is to sign him to the active roster, which would give them four quarterbacks.
The quarterbacks were not accessible to the press. On Thursdays, they usually talk.
Wilson’s growth is critical for the team, which took him second overall in the draft, but Saleh is taking a cautious approach to Wilson’s injury. White has the luxury because to his unusually excellent play.
“A quarterback who is providing you a clear blueprint on how this offense is intended to work,” Saleh said of White. In his first NFL start, the former practice squad quarterback threw for 405 yards and established a league record for most completions by a first-time starter (37) to lead the Jets to a come-from-behind victory against the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 31.
White was given another start last Thursday night as Wilson was still healing, but he only lasted one quarter. He departed the game after colliding with a defender and tossing a touchdown to rookie Elijah Moore. He never returned, unable to handle the ball since two of his fingers were numb. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 95 yards and one touchdown.
According to Saleh, White’s forearm has returned full strength with no side effects. When asked whether things might get worse, “”If Mike performs amazing, like we hope he will, that’s not odd,” Saleh said of White’s performance against the Bills, who have the NFL’s top-ranked defense. It’s fantastic. In this league, a good quarterback is a rare commodity, and we believe we have four of them.”
Wilson has lost five of his six starts after being granted the starting position with no competition in the preseason. With four touchdowns and nine interceptions, he has completed just 57.5 percent of his throws. His total QBR is 28.0, which puts him in 32nd place out of 33 qualifiers. Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears is the only quarterback with a worse QBR (27.4).
The offense, which had been historically bad through the first six games, began to click as soon as White joined the lineup, and Johnson maintained the trend. The Jets have scored 64 points in their previous two games after scoring just 80 in their first six.
