The Atascadero Kiwanis Club is remodeling the North County Kitchen to serve nutritious and locally grown meals that connect people. The project began with a kitchen build-out, which will be completed in early 2019.
The “meals that connect menu” is a new restaurant in Atascadero Kiwanis. The remodel of the North County Kitchen for Meals That Connect • has been done by the Kiwanis Club.
Early in February 2022, the project was finished.
ATASCADERO — ATASCADERO — ATASCADERO — The Kiwanis Club of Atascadero donated a full kitchen makeover to Meals That Connect at the start of the year. The kitchen at the Atascadero Senior Citizens Center (which is utilized by Meals That Connect in the North County) was finished in early February 2022 after the project was done in a week.
Many Kiwanis members assist Meals That Connect in delivering meals to homebound persons in the community. The aged, physically handicapped, veterans, and spouses and widows of veterans are among those who qualify. Tony Villa, Glen Casey, and Ben Mendoza, all Kiwanians, discovered and led the refurbishment.
“The owner of Mendoza Meat, Ben Mendoza. Tony Villa, a Kiwanian, stated, “He asked me to go in and have a look at the kitchen, and it required a lot of repair.”
We’re going to get through this together, Atascadero
Though the majority of the food is prepared in the Meals That Connect kitchen in San Luis Obispo (SLO), most of the prep work, packing, and heating of the food takes place in Atascadero before it is delivered to those in our community who need it.
“Our main concentration is on the young, but when we see something that needs to be done in the community, we jump right in,” said Glen Casey, Kiwanis’ Community Services director.
Villa asked Liz Dunn, the North County site manager for Meals That Connect, what she would like if she had a wish list. Dunn had just requested for assistance in cleaning and painting the kitchen, but Villa felt it wasn’t enough and turned the job up to Kiwanis. After Casey, Mendoza, and Villa visited the site, it was determined that the whole kitchen would be rebuilt for free.
“So what we did was we took everything out of the kitchen and started over.” Installed new flooring, replaced some sheetrock that needed to be redone, installed new counters, and installed new cabinets. We were able to locate two stainless steel industrial sinks. As a result, we overhauled the whole kitchen area. “From the flooring to everything,” Villa said.
The Atascadero Kiwanis Club now has over 100 members, and 28 of them worked on the project and donated.
“It’s a very, really fantastic feeling to have people interested in something as vital as this,” Casey added.
From a prior job, Casey had built a rapport with the Home Depot staff. Kiwanis also put out a grant request to Home Depot to assist with the project when asked. Unfortunately, they were turned down. Nonetheless, Home Depot provided reduced rates and even free things.
“We had requested a budget of $4,000 to $5,000 from Home Depot, and due to Assistant Store Manager Jacob Long, the local Atascadero store provided half of it.” “They’re incredibly giving and community-minded,” Casey said.
In addition, Sherman Williams contributed all of the paint, and Idlers hauled away all of the broken major appliances. The Kiwanis Club supplied all of the sinks, flooring, and other materials, as well as all of the work. The kitchen’s plumbing and electrical were both repaired and renovated by the Club.
“It’s a terrific location to go see what Kiwanians do for the community first and foremost.” Second, what they [Meals That Connect] do for the neighborhood in terms of meal delivery,” Villa said. “And it is the most important thing they do.” That’s not what we do. This is something we like doing.”
